Be Aware of Workers’ Compensation Fraud Schemes

When you apply for workers’ compensation benefits after a work-related injury, you are looking for financial relief, and the last thing you likely expect is to suffer additional financial losses. However, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warns people across the United States of fraudsters who aim to take advantage of people in this situation.

Recently, a group of people in San Diego engaged in a workers’ compensation fraud scheme posing as a hotline to help injured workers, mostly targeting migrant seasonal workers. The workers thought they were calling to get legal and medical help when the fraudsters instead subjected the patients to unnecessary and intrusive medical procedures to defraud workers’ compensation insurers.

The scheme used flyers, billboards, and other ads to target people in industries with a high risk of injuries. Injured workers thought they were calling for legal assistance, but they were actually calling lawyers who would use them for the highest profits possible. The attorneys would refer the workers to corrupt physicians, who also wanted to bill the insurance for as much as possible. While the lawyers and physicians lined their pockets, the injured workers suffered even more.

Since the scheme was discovered by authorities, the FBI reports that about 37 individuals and companies have received convictions of fraud, and many people received prison sentences and had funds seized and frozen. However, this does not mean there aren’t more fraudsters out there ready to take advantage of injured workers.
